"Words have been used too often; touched and turned, and left exposed to the dust of the street. The words we seek hang close to the tree. We come at dawn and find them sweet beneath the leaf." —Virginia Woolf, Jacob's Room (1922)

Congratulations to Women We Love

Mary Rose Betten recently saw her poetry come to life on stage. Give It to An Actor, an ensemble reading of poems about acting, was presented at Santa Barbara City College in the Fe Bland Auditorium, Friday, September 25. The six-poet cast included Chella Courington, Christina Pages and David Starkey of the English Department. A retired actress-turned-poet, former actress-in-residence at SBCC, and beloved AROHO faculty member, Mary Rose Betten based the production on her recently-published collection of poetry, Finding Your Best Angle: Give it to An Actor. The performance was dedicated to actress/writer Fannie Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes, who was the honoree in attendance at Friday’s performance. We wish we could have been there to share the moment, Mary Rose!

Rebecca Brown (2003 & 2005 AROHO Retreat faculty member) has received much praise for her new book of essays:  American Romances. Look for it soon on AROHO's bookshelf.

Congratulations to Elna Baker (one of AROHO's 2009 Ducky scholarship winners) on the upcoming release of her book, The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance.  It looks hilarious, and is due for release October 15.

Lesley Hazleton, celebrated writer and 2007 AROHO Retreat faculty member, has written a new book: After the Prophet (Doubleday). Visit www.aftertheprophet.com to learn more, or look for it soon on AROHO's bookshelf.

Kim Ponders (AROHO's 2009 Retreat Director, faculty member, and GOF panelist) was awarded a fellowship at MacDowell for October. Cheers to a room of your own, Kim!

Since returning home, 2009 AROHO retreatant Angela Cannon-Crothers' short story, "The Intuitive's Guide to Reading the Clouds" has been accepted to the literary journal, Stone Canoe. A natural story-teller, Angela's also busy marketing her children's story, Grape Pie Season, illustrated by Darryl Abraham. Sweet!
